Winter Hibernation Setup
Getting your turtle safely through the cold
🎯 Who it is for
Keepers through autumn and winter
💡 What it solves
- Winter temperatures drop and the turtle stops eating
- Worried that something will go wrong during hibernation
- Not sure how to set up the hibernation environment
💰 Budget guide
A winter setup costs roughly CNY 100-150
The solution
A thermostat and a hibernation box work together to bring the turtle safely through winter
Species covered: Aquatic turtlesSemi-aquatic turtles
🔧 Setup steps
1
Monitor the ambient temperature
Watch the indoor temperature, and start preparing hibernation equipment once it falls below 15°C
2
Install the heater
Place the heater in the water and set it to 20-25°C (non-hibernation) or 5-10°C (hibernation mode)
3
Prepare the hibernation box
Put the box somewhere stable and lay down substrate (coco coir or sphagnum moss), keeping it moderately damp
4
Move the turtle in
Transfer the turtle into the box, making sure there is enough room to move and a place to hide
5
Check regularly
Check the temperature and humidity weekly and watch the turtle, to keep the hibernation environment stable
💡 Usage tips
- Stop feeding 1-2 weeks before hibernation to empty the gut
- Hold the hibernation temperature at 5-10°C and avoid swings
- Check the turtle once a week, but do not disturb it often
- Warm the turtle up gradually after hibernation; do not raise the temperature suddenly
- Once it wakes, offer a little water first, then ease back into normal feeding
❓ FAQ
Q1Does my turtle have to hibernate?
ANo. A heater can keep the water warm so the turtle stays active instead. Hibernation is a natural behaviour but not a requirement. Beginners are advised to use a heater and avoid the risks of hibernation.
Q2Do I need to feed during hibernation?
ANo. Metabolism is very low during hibernation and the turtle does not eat. The gut must be emptied beforehand so that leftover food does not cause digestive problems.
Q3How do I wake the turtle after hibernation?
AGradual warming is the key. Raise the temperature by 2-3°C per day until it is back to normal. Offer water first on waking, and feed only once its behaviour looks normal. A post-hibernation food can help it recover.
