Cloudy Water: How to Fix It
Water not clear? A complete solution
🎯 Who it is for
Keepers whose tank water is cloudy or unclear
💡 What it solves
- The water is so cloudy you cannot see the turtle
- It clouds up again soon after a water change
- The filter is running but the water is still poor
The solution
Upgrade filtration, adjust the maintenance routine and manage feeding together
🔧 Setup steps
Check the filter's flow
Does the filter match the tank volume? Above 40 L needs a larger filter or an external one. A small tank (20-40 L) is fine with a low-water filter.
Add filter media
Add ceramic rings to the filter to establish biological filtration. New media takes 2 weeks to colonise, and unstable water at first is normal.
Adjust the water-change routine
Change 1/3 of the water weekly; do not change it daily and do not change all of it. Treat the new water with a conditioner to reduce stress.
Feed less
Overfeeding is a common cause of cloudy water. Feed on a schedule, about a head-sized portion each time, and remove uneaten food promptly.
Clean the filter
Rinse the filter pad weekly and the media monthly. Note: do not rinse biological media under tap water - rinse it lightly in old tank water to keep the beneficial bacteria.
💡 Usage tips
- Run the filter 24 hours a day; interruptions degrade water quality
- Unstable water in the first 2 weeks of a new tank is normal - wait for the bacteria to establish
- Never change all the water; 1/3 each time keeps it stable
- A feeding ring keeps food from scattering
- Large turtles produce a lot of waste and need stronger filtration
