Turtle Not Eating: What to Do
Lost its appetite? These steps sort it out
🎯 Who it is for
Keepers whose turtle is off its food
💡 What it solves
- The turtle just sits there and ignores the food
- Worried it is starving and not sure what to do
- Several different foods tried and it still will not eat
The solution
Check temperature, lighting and environment in turn, then fix the specific cause
🔧 Setup steps
Check the water temperature
Measure with a thermometer; if it is below 20°C, switch the heater on and bring it to 22-28°C. Once it reaches temperature, wait 1-2 hours before feeding.
Check the basking lamp
Make sure it runs 4-6 hours a day with a basking temperature of 30-35°C. A turtle that basks too little is inactive and eats poorly.
Check the environment
A new tank, new equipment or a change of surroundings stresses a turtle into not eating. A new environment needs 3-7 days to adjust, with less disturbance.
Try different food
Switch to another food or use freeze-dried treats to stimulate appetite. Some turtles simply dislike a particular food - try different options.
Watch the turtle
If temperature, lighting and environment are all fine but it still will not eat after 7 days, check its eyes, skin and activity; if illness is suspected, see a vet.
💡 Usage tips
- Temperature is the first thing to check for appetite - start there
- A new turtle not eating for 3-7 days is a normal adjustment period
- Feed between 10 am and 4 pm, when the turtle is most active
- Never force-feed; missing a few days is not harmful
- If the eyes are swollen or the skin looks wrong, it may be ill - isolate and observe
